"Music from the border of apperception. Mirko Uhlig (Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf, Suneaters, The Vévé Seashore) is back with spring and floods your rooms with a fresh warm breeze; his first solo piece named "VIVMMI.

These 37 minutes mark a turning point in Uhlig,s work. "Genmaicha: At the opal seashore (the last full length Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf-album on Mystery Sea, October 2005) was a already a vague hint of what comes now: Uhlig on the peak of low volume.

"VIVMMI is divided into five segments accompanied by a host of verdant birds and the melancholic and peaceful humming chords of an old droning piano (and without much doubt: completely out-of-tune). As if someone had pushed the pause-button on a lazy day in May. Then the sunbeams cleave through the thick tree tops in the shape of hyaline guitar layers. A hazy day at the lake; the orange dusk begins to surface on the glassy water. Slowly night flashes by and the gloomy pollies start their journey towards the moon which is at the end of the food chain this time. Open your doors for spring and lay your fruits upon the table. This is about loss and union.

"VIVMMI is also the first release on the brandnew Ex Ovo label. Each copy of the limited first edition (65 hand-signed copies) will have an individual carboard-artwork by the artist."

After listening to the piece again after several years, it makes much more sense to me in
this particular format - and its division into two parts - even though I can't remember in detail anymore why I used
what I used. So - I change the view from producer to consumer. Distance is such a neat sweet candy! The circumstances in which the record was conceived feel far away from now me and smell like "history".
Getting in touch with it is equal some nice "cultural anthropology". So, have a nice time, watch the birds at night and may it not be your last tape.

'VIVMMI' by Mirko Uhlig was already reviewed in Vital Weekly 525. Back then Frans de Waard wrote "What was already present in the music by Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf (or perhaps the others, but I don't know them) is the element of drone music, here again playing an important role. There is also the extended use of field recordings, especially bird calls, the slowed down piano and guitar sounds and the more obscured sounds of objects falling to the ground or a door squeaking. The work is recorded at a very low volume, which is a pity since one has to crank the volume all the way up to hear something and that seems unnecessary to me. Mirko Uhlig plays a form of drone music that is highly refreshing, touched by influences of some of the work of Nurse With Wound, but with enough of it's own. It's drone related, has field recordings and processed instruments, all the common elements so to say, but he creates something that is beyond the ordinary. It is about time that he went out to produce his first real CD." That is yet to happen, but De Waard has put his money where his mouth is, and re-released the highly limited CDR (65 were made) onto LP, and Uhlig did a fine job at remastering, making the whole thing a louder and a bit more present, without losing that great touch of sensitivity. Packed in a similar grey cardboard cover like the likewise fine LP by pick-up on Plinkity Plonk last year, this is yet again a small edition (130), but a lovely item to cherish. Wenig an VIVMMI (plink 26, LP), 2006 zuerst eine CDr, die MIRKO UHLIG auf Ex Ovo herausbrachte, ist nicht seltsam. Ganz verhalten entspinnt der früher als Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf bekannte Klangpoet in Bonn einen zart-romantischen Hauch von Beinahenichts, der die Sinne über die Grenze ins Überwirkliche lockt. Eine blinkende Gitarre ist mit im Spiel, die Nacht und der Sternenhimmel. Vieles bleibt gedämpft im Halbdunkel. Aber dann setzt sich doch eine Gitarrenmelodie durch, gegen die andrängende Stille ebenso wie gegen rumpelnde Angriffe. Es ist eine alte Melodie, bei der mir ist, als hätte ich sie schon mal - vielleicht nicht in diesem Leben - auf dem Dudelsack gehört. Die B-Seite tastet sich vorsichtig hinein in ein an- und abschwellendes Dröhnen. Dann wieder Stille (in die perfekt die Glocken von St. Adalbero hinein läuten) und gedämpft zuckende, vibrierende Nichtstille, auch Zwitschern und Pfeifen, unglaubwürdig als Vögel. Im Hintergrund tüpfelt es melodiös und hintergründig. Noch einmal das vogelige Zwielicht und dann endgültig Stille. Das nenn ich Seelenfang mit Köpfchen. (From: Bad Alchemy 65)

The Mirko Uhlig LP VIVMMI (PLINKITY PLONK PLINK 26) was originally issued as a small-run CDR item by the Ex Ovo label in 2006 and has been remastered for this vinyl edition of 130 copies. This exquisite work features some of the most delicate and washed-out music I've heard in this vein for a long time ­ not unlike Feu Follet, who have also appeared on Ex Ovo (The Icicle Lectures Vol 1 is superb, but sold out). On the A side's long track, the ghosts of beautiful melodies are heard from afar, as if wafted towards your ears on a gentle wind, so fragile that they vanish as quickly as the shadow of a cloud. The B side features some slightly more conventional electronic drones, intercut with water effects and other field recordings, but in ways that make everything appear that much more ponderous, as if watching a silver stream move in slow motion. Der Anfang ruft das Hören alter Hafler Trio-Scheiben ins Gedächtnis, ein Vogelschwarm zwitschert seltsam verhal(l)ten durch frequenzreduzierte Bänder, ehe der erste Stapel an Bordunalmantras auf den Hörer losgelassen wird. Explizit leise gehört offenbart sich auf dem Re-Release einer Miniauflage von 65 CDRs eine Welt, die nur Mirko Uhlig mit seinen Händen und Geräten erschaffen vermag. Das ihm dabei jeglicher Pathos abgeht, welcher der zeitgenössischen Dronefront sonst gerne anhaftet gereicht ihm hier zur wiederholten Bewunderung.
Umso interessanter, dass nun Frans De Waard, Inhaber des Plinkity Plonk Labels und Betreiber von Korm Plastics, eine LP des im Vital Weekly ausgiebig gelobten Künstlers verlegt und dabei gleich in Punkto Organität der Haptik und dem Sound höchst gerecht wird: eingedeckelt zwischen zwei Hartpappen lagert das neu gemischte und remasterte Minialbum auf starkem schwarzen Vinyl. Der Aufwand lohnt sich, denn obschon der Redaktion keinerlei Vergleich zur normalen CDR vorliegt, ist der Klang überwältigend transparent und klar, eine klare Ode an die feine Arbeitsweise Uhligs.
Die A-Seite mit ihrem Klangtryptich wirkt wie die absolute Zutatenliste eines Meistermenüs: weiche abgefederte Feldaufnahmen inmitten gegeneinander gestimmter Streichinstrumentierung, seltsam diffuse Knarzklänge getaucht in sparsame Hallfahnen und stets eine gewichtige Menge an Dramaturgie und dem Mut zur Stille- all das verbindet sich in drei Stücken zu einer durchgehend hypnotisierenden Melange aus Drone und Musique Concrete.
Umseitig finden sich erstaunlich sperrige Klänge, angefangen von stereophonem Windpfeifen und dem Knallen einer Tür widmet sich Uhlig dem ausgetriebenen Stehton von einer gänzlich anderen Seite. Ähnlich wie Oval's Musikkonzept addiert sich »VIVMMI« nahtlos in den Raumklang der gerade bespielten Räumlichkeiten, gerät das Klackern des Redaktionslaptop zum integralen Bestandteil der Uhlig'schen Metamusik. Wechselnde Droneschleifen erzeugen ein stabiles Soundnetz um den Hörer, vermengen sich phasergeleitet zu dichten Schwärmen tiefengeprägter Harmonien, die sich über den Zweiton nie hinausbewegen und entfernt auf die Nachhaltigkeit eines Thomas Köners setzen. Grandiose Neuauflage, die dringend nötig war und auf Zeitlosigkeit setzt.
